LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (NEWS RELEASE) - Focusing on the difficult budgetary decisions policymakers will face if elected, three local health coalitions are joining together to help the public learn about their choices in local legislative races. The 7 C's Health Initiative, La Crosse Healthy Living Collaboration and the Changing the Culture of Risky Drinking Behavior Coalition are hosting a Candidate Forum on Thursday, Oct. 11th from 7:00-8:30pm. The Forum includes the 32nd Senate District race between Jennifer Shilling and Bill Feehan, 94th Assembly District race between Steve Doyle and Bruce Evers and the 95th Assembly District with Jill Billings. Representatives from all three races have been invited and are expected to attend.
"Plotting a Course to Healthier Communities" is the title of the Forum. "This is an opportunity for the public to learn how the candidates see their role in supporting healthy communities that reduce chronic diseases; such as strokes, diabetes and heart disease," said Linda Lee, Nutrition Manager with La Crosse County Health Dept. Chronic diseases are the most preventable diseases. All policy impacts our health. The Coulee Region has great examples of policy that promotes healthy behaviors. However, WI still faces a crisis in health care costs due to chronic disease that can be prevented where we live, work and play.
"We will be asking questions and learning the candidate's views on how WI can support healthy community environments," said Judi Zabel, Health Educator and Forum planner. "With 80% of health care dollars being linked to chronic disease, we can make a major impact on health care expenses, workforce productivity and economic recovery by having healthier communities."
The forum will be held at the Radisson Hotel, La Crosse in the Minnesota Room. Pre-registration is not necessary, but people may call for more information. The first half of the forum will ask three questions on the topics of alcohol, tobacco, nutrition and physical activity. The second half of the forum will be open to questions from the audience. Moderator for the evening is retired Monroe County Judge Michael McAlpine.
