LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Next week is National Protect Your Identity Week.
We spoke with Credit Counselor Tim Powers. He says between 9 and 10 million people are affected by identity theft and fraud each year. One popular way to steal your information by going through your garbage.
Powers said, "If you have any bank statements, other kind of documents that have identifying information like social security number or account numbers. If you're going to throw them away, shred it."
You can attend a meeting about preventing identity theft Tuesday and Wednesday next week at the Great Rivers United Way building at 1855 E Main St # 2 in Onalaska. It's set for 2 PM in the basement conference room.
