LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Deb Schams' second grade class at Cathedral Elementary had a special guest on Tuesday.

La Crosse Mayor Matt Harter talked about how the city works and what he does as mayor for the students' "Citizenship and Government" unit. He also talked about being a good citizen, the importance of voting, and read the book "Arthur Meets the President" to the class.

Lauren Hegge, a second grader in Mrs. Schams' class said she learned a lot.

"I learned that you have to be 18 to be elected for mayor, or other people," said Hegge. "And you have to be 35 to be elected for president."

Hegge said she could see herself as mayor someday, but is less sure about being president. But no matter where her career leads her, Hegge said there will be ways she can contribute to the community.

"I could help people," said Hegge. "And I could vote when I turn 18."

This wasn't the Mayor's first social studies presentation, but was impressed with how much knowledge the students had on the government nonetheless."
