An animal abuse case out of Wausau is getting worldwide attention. It's even lead to a petition that has thousands of people around the world talking.
Authorities say 20-year-old Sean Janas poisoned and killed her boyfriend's dog, Mary, back in June. Janas is currently being held in the Marathon County Jail on a $2,500 dollar bond. She is charged with abusing and killing a dog.
According to the criminal complaint, Janas bragged about what she did in a diary and even got joy from it.
"The story was terrible and I couldn't pass it without re-posting," Sydney Rose of Wausau said. That's why she started an online petition.
"People are reading about it. That's what I wanted. I wanted to get Mary's voice out there," she said.
The petition asks for the maximum penalty against Janas, if she's convicted. That would mean more than four years behind bars.
But will a petition have any impact? Prosecutors said it can.
"Having the public's input is helpful. It gives us a sense of how the public feels about a case, and they obviously feel quite strong," Marathon County District Attorney LaMont Jacobson said.
Janas no longer lives in the area, but a former neighbor said he saw the dog and when he realized something was wrong, he called police.
"I called them the day it died. The day I saw blood in the back yard, I called right away," Janas' former neighbor David Rockman.
Newsline 9 tried contacting Janas' attorney, but we never heard back.
As far as the petition, Rose said it's about remembering Mary in addition to pushing for justice.
"I wanted to get Mary's voice out there. This is a terrible situation that she was put through and she doesn't have a voice in it," she said.
