Motorists lined up outside the Mount View Mobil Station in Rib Mountain, to buy $1.84 a gallon gas.
It was part of an event put on by Americans For Prosperity-Wisconsin.
Wisconsin State Director, Luke Hilgemann said, "We are here from 11-3 offering cheap gas. We pay the difference in the cost.
It is a great way to draw attention to the failed economic policies of President Obama. In 2009, gas cost just $1.84."
But some call the event a gas for votes scheme.
We Are Wisconsin filed a complaint with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board to investigate whether the event violated state elections laws. Executive Director, Kristen Crowell said, " We believe they violated the law by giving away something of more than $1 as Wisconsin law states."
The GAB has announced no official ruling on the gas event.
The Marathon County Sheriff's Department added extra patrols in the area to avoid traffic snarls.
