YWCA awarded CASA for kids grant

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The Coulee Region YWCA has been awarded $40,000 dollars for their CASA for Kids program. Funding for this grant comes from the National CASA for Kids organization and will be used to train and support additional CASA volunteers.

CASA stands for "Court Appointed Special Advocates". This program trains volunteers as advocates for children who are in the judicial system due to neglect or abuse.

This year, the Coulee Region's CASA for kids program saw a record number of referrals.

"What we had seen over the last year was a tremendous increase in court orders. So what that meant was we needed to provide volunteers for those assignments. But the staffing pens were not sufficient to provide necessary training and supervision for these volunteers."

The grant money will fulfill the programs short term needs, but long term needs are still in question.

"This is a limited term grant. So that will help us out for the next year. What we need to do is to make sure that the community is aware that this need probably will not go away. We're seeing a trend towards the use of CASA volunteers more and more."

The money received through this grant will be used to cover the cost of training and supporting CASA volunteers for the next year.
