La Crosse, Wisconsin (WXOW) ------ The La Crosse County jail is at 80 percent its capacity....that was one of the issues up for discussion at the La Crosse County Board meeting.
The first line of business was to take suggestions on how to reduce the inmate population. One thing everyone agreed on is that it will take various groups working together to find a solution and that includes the Sheriff's Department, Justice Sanctions and even judges and treatment courts.
And as for that 80 percent, Sheriff Steve Helgeson explains why it's an issue. "We classify inmates based on their dangerousness in jail so if we have a lot of very violent persons we need a lot of bed space but we can't put them all together so we may have the space available in some areas but not other areas." Helgeson says the jail has unused space but in order to properly manage it they would need to hire 6 more employees.
