FRENCH ISLAND, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A close call for a bus driver on French Island Thursday. The 78 year-old driver failed to negotiate a the curve at Lakeshore Drive and Goddard Street. The bus was went over the embankment and was stopped by a tree less than ten feet from going into the French Slough. Before going over the embankment, the bus hit a telephone pole, bringing down telephone lines. Crews from Century link, Charter Communications, and Excel Energy arrived to work on the downed lines and told police that the lines would only be down for a few hours.
Police Chief of the Town of Campbell, Tim Kelemen, said "The seventy-eight-year-old driver was the only person on the bus. There were no students and right now the cause of the accident is under investigation."
The driver had no visible injuries, but was taken to the hospital for an evaluation.
