EAU CLAIRE, Wisconsin (WQOW) - Before you head out for the holiday weekend, law enforcement officials are reminding us of a few things.
Officers say this is the time of the year when burglars will try to take advantage of someone who is out of town. They recommend telling your neighbors about your travel plans.
They also say to make it look or sound like someone is home by leaving a light or radio on. And be careful of what you share on social media sites.
Officer Kyle Roder of Eau Claire Police says, "With the advent of smart phones and things, people telling everybody where they are going to be and that they are going to be gone, although that's a great thing for your friends and family, when other people and the public get to see that and they know where you are and where you live, if they know you are gone, it makes your house more of a target."
Another tip from police for Black Friday shoppers: keep valuables like shopping bags or GPS devices hidden and out of sight.
