CALEDONIA, Minnesota (WXOW) - At least one community in Minnesota could celebrate on Sunday. For the third consecutive year, and fifth time in the last six years, Caledonia football returned from the Metrodome with some serious hardware.
On Sunday, the community welcomed home the triumphant Warriors at Caledonia Area High School, honoring the team that completed the MSHSL's first ever Class AA three-peat in football.
Caledonia was able to defeat Moose Lake/Willow River 25-22 in Friday's thrilling rematch of the 2011 title game thanks in part to a last second field goal by Levi Schmitz. It wasn't always an easy road, but the Warriors found a way.
"My heart is still, it's not racing as much as it was, but every time I talk about it with somebody, I still get the feelings, the nerves and everything," said Schmitz. "My blood starts pumping. Just seeing all these people here that have supported us throughout the season, it's just great."
"Fan support is awesome. We came back into town, and there were people everywhere. Everyone was cheering. We had a ton of people at the game. It was awesome," added senior Jeremy DeWall.
Quarterback Alex Varney said, "We have the best fans in the whole state. Without them, we wouldn't be at the top where we are. They get us so excited. They get so loud. It's just amazing what they do for us."
