Mobile dentist stops in Ontario

ONTARIO, Wisconsin (WXOW)—A dental office on wheels rolled into Ontario on Tuesday for Kids First Mobile Dentistry.

It provides a free cleaning, fluoride treatment and x-ray for kids.

It is close quarters in the mobile dental office, but Dr. David Wake said it's worth it.

"This is a mobile van so you can only do so much in it," Dr. Wake said. "But it's very nice for letting kids get in here, get their teeth cleaned then checked."

Kids First Mobile Dentistry's goal is to make it easier for school aged children like to get preventative dental care.

"Parents now a days are very busy and getting kids into the dentist after school is sometimes difficult for them," Rod Holum Jr., Program Coordinator said.

It's important for kids to take care of the primary teeth because they are the guide for their permanent teeth.

"If you don't have healthy teeth you can't eat, you don't get proper food, you're not going to have proper growth," Dr. Wake said. "It's very important kids take care of their teeth even though they are going to lose them."

The is no out of pocket costs for parents; what isn't covered by insurance is paid by donations given to First Mobile.

If the dentist does find any problems kids are referred back to their regular dentist.

Students visiting the mobile dental office said they didn't mind missing class for a cleaning.

"Well it was kind of scary," Adolfo Alcantar, Fifth grader said. "First I thought they were going to poke me then I found out it was just fine it wasn't scary at all."

He said he's even going to tell his friends to go to the dentist at school too.
