LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - La Crosse city council president Audrey Kader is challenging a recall petition filed against her Nov. 16.
The Restore La Crosse Committee filed that recall, handing in more than 250 signatures to the city clerk.
The city clerk needs to approve 158 signatures to trigger a recall election.
Kader has challenged all but 66 of those signatures. More than 60 percent of the signatures submitted list 702 Franciscan Way as an address.
Kader said this address is a mailbox address for students who live on campus at Viterbo University. The address is for the student union, it's not a residency, she said.
But, it is up to Kader to prove the signatures are ineligible.
"It is the law and if it's the law we have to follow it. So, even though I don't like it, it's there and we just have to do it," Kader said.
Greg Luce, of the Restore La Crosse committee, submitted a rebuttal to Kader's challenge Friday morning.
"The first step is to recall Audrey Kader, get her out of the city council and then hopefully carry momentum into April and get rid of a bunch of other councilors that are on the same page as her," he said.
Kader now has two days respond to the rebuttal and submit it to the city clerk.
If Kader submits her response, the clerk then has two weeks to announce whether a recall election will move forward.
