World AIDS Day

Posted:

Dec. 1 is World AIDS Day.

The White House observed the event with the display of a large, red ribbon, which is the international symbol of support for and awareness of AIDS.

Doctors say the AIDS epidemic began in 1981, and while progress in treating the disease has been made, it's estimated that some 50,000 new Americans are infected with HIV every year.

More than a million people in the U.S. are living with the disease.
