LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The Salvation Army received some help from Wettstein's customers and employees today, in the form of turkey.
Owner Dan Wettstein personally delivered more than 200 turkeys to the Salvation Army's warehouse. The turkeys came from a promotion Wettstein's ran in November awarding a free turkey with a purchase. Customers who didn't want or need their turkey opted to donate it to the Salvation Army. The goal was one ton of turkey and they delivered more than 2,500 pounds of turkey in all.
Wettstein said, "The giving spirit of the people in the community showed through. There were people who came in and would get a turkey and they said, 'you know what I don't need that turkey-give it a better place.'"
The turkeys will be given to families who are unable to afford a Christmas meal this holiday. 625 families are already signed up to receive food baskets from the Salvation Army this year.
