LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- La Crosse mayoral candidate Chris Olson says his business background makes him uniquely suited for the job.

The 3rd District city council member announced his decision Wednesday. Olson is a first-term member of the council and says he'll forgo an attempt at a second term on the council to run for mayor.

He's the owner of The Sports Nut Tavern and previously worked for Kwik Trip. Olson says his business background makes him a strong candidate to promote fiscal responsibility as mayor.

"I want to continue on the path of fiscal responsibility in keeping the taxes low to the citizens because we are one of the highest in the state and we need to do what we can to hold the line in that area," Olson said.

Former mayor John Medinger is set to formally announce his candidacy Friday and two others, Randy Magno and Randall Czapiewski are also running.

Candidates must file nomination papers and signatures by January 2. A primary would be held on February 19 to narrow the field of candidates to two for the April general election.

Current mayor, Matt Harter, is not running for a second term.
