WAUSAU, Wisconsin (WAOW) - The first significant winter storm of the season is forecast to impact Central Wisconsin this weekend.
Current storm projections has the brunt of the storm over the region on Sunday. That is when the most significant accumulating snow is expected to fall.
In advance of the storm's development the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Marathon, Lincoln, Vilas, Oneida, Langlade, Forest, Florence, Taylor, Clark, and northern Marinette Counties starting late Saturday evening. The watch is scheduled to remain in effect through Sunday evening.
A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the same time period for Price, Ashland and Iron Counties.
It is possible additional counties will be added to the watch or warning as the storm develops.
The storm is expected to provide the region with its first widespread significant snowfall of the season. Very preliminary snowfall projections place the heaviest snow amounts northwest of Wausau, Wis. where 4 to 6" is possible given current estimates. Locations in Central Wisconsin including Marathon County appear, given current estimations, to be in a 2 to 4"+ snow potential range. Areas of Villas County and the traditional snow belt regions may see additional inches with the advent of lake effect snow showers as the storm exits the state by Monday morning. These projections are preliminary and subject to change as the storm track becomes better known.
Drivers should prepare for the potential of poor road conditions and reduced visibilities on Central Wisconsin's roadways Sunday morning through Monday morning.
