LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The Washburn Neighborhood Community Gardens already promotes a healthy lifestyle by allowing the community to garden in the middle of urban La Crosse.
Friday, volunteers helped lay the groundwork to put a hoop house in the garden.
The hoop house greenhouse, donated by Mayo Clinic, will allow gardeners to protect their greens and tomato crop from harsh winter conditions.
"They can also get engaged in a really healthy, active, gardening-type project so hopefully we're gonna be able to inspire people to learn about where their food comes from," said Andy Novak, community gardens chairperson of the Hillview Urban Agriculture Center board.
The hoop house is a collaborative effort between Mayo Clinic, Western and HUAC.
The structure is expected to be set up by Sunday.
