ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- A Rochester teenager remains in critical condition after she was shot in the neck accidentally by her own grandfather.
It was shortly before 11:00 PM when a 62-year-old man thought he heard someone breaking into his home. He grabbed a handgun and told his wife to call police.
We're told he fired one shot in the direction of who he thought was a burglar and missed. He then fired a second shot and that struck the person in the neck. When he turned on the lights, he discovered he'd mistakenly shot his 16-year-old granddaughter.
She was taken to Saint Marys Hospital and at last check was in surgery. No arrests have been made.
Police say the grandparents are being cooperative and are extremely shaken. The investigation is still ongoing and officials are waiting to speak with the granddaughter.
She is listed in critical condition but officers are hopeful that she will pull through.
