Balloon with cameras launches from Iowa nearly reaches space

A camera-equipped balloon launched from Calmar nearly made it to space before landing in Michigan.

John Flaig launched the balloon December 2nd.  He says the inspiration for this project came from watching a growing number of amateur "near space" weather balloon launches on YouTube.

He tracked the balloon's progress with a GPS device.

The cameras caught several impressive images... and even a near-miss from a passing jet.
