UPDATE: Man dies after going through ice near Augusta

Rural Augusta (WQOW) - The death of a man in a rural Augusta pond has been ruled an accidental drowning.

The Eau Claire County Medical Examiners Office made that ruling Wednesday in the death of Christian Borntreger, 60. Rescue crews were called to the private pond Tuesday night.

The Eau Claire County Sheriff's Office says Borntreger was trying to retrieve his domesticated ducks from the pond when he broke through ice that was only two inches thick. His body was found in about 10 feet of water.

Borntreger was a member of the Amish community. Officials say there was some delay in reporting the incident because a family member had to go to a neighbors house to use the phone to call 911.
