ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- The Rochester Public Utilities board met Tuesday afternoon to discuss the financial aspects of the proposed CapX2020 project.
The last major upgrade in the region's electric transmission infrastructure was 30 years ago. With population growth, electricity usage is increasing.
The CapX2020 transmission line would hold an increased amount of energy and also tap into renewable energy.
It will run in this region near Hampton, work its way to a substation north of Rochester, then into La Crosse. The board discussed Tuesday how they will pay for the portion of the project which will cost about $50 million.
The board also discussed the makeup of the committees, how maintenance scheduling will occur and how they will issue bonds to pay for the project. This is the first phase. Next, the board will purchase land for the substation and begin building the transmission line.
