Police Cite La Crosse Mayor Matt Harter for Running a Flashing Red Light

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) La Crosse Police cited Mayor Matt Harter for failing to stop at a flashing red light.

It happened December 2 about two-thirty in the morning at Third and Jay Streets.  The officer writing the report says he had to, quote, "quickly and aggressively" apply his brakes to avoid a collision.

When he pulled the car over, the officer says he recognized the driver as Mayor Harter.

According to the police report, when asked why he missed the red light the mayor replied, "Yeah, I goofed up."  The report says the mayor was downtown to provide a ride for a friend and he denied consuming alcohol.

A later field sobriety test administered by a state trooper determined that the mayor's ability to operate a vehicle was not impaired.

The mayor was released and given a verbal warning at the time.  He was advised that a citation would likely follow.  That citation was delivered December 7.
