Church sees spirit of giving during Christmas season

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Beyond the doors of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, underneath the glow of Christmas tree lights, an empty collection basin weaves its way through the aisles of the congregation.

Church-goes pull out their wallets place what they can into the collection bin.

Revered Meredith McGrath said sometimes, it just takes the magic of a decorated evergreen tree.

"It's just a natural time that folks do want to be generous, that there's a thankfulness for all that God has done," McGrath said. "I think particularly Christmas is that reminder."

McGrath sees the power of giving in its strongest force during December.

"There's that excitement and that energy around Christmas," she said.

That generosity reflects on the church. The holiday boost, and yearly donations, is factored into the church's budget.

The money is used to fund the ministry and charity project.

"Giving for the month of December last year was up 30 percent from other months, which is significant, but it's not like a 13th month or whatever. So, it does matter but I think within church culture, there's a sense of being generous all the year long," McGrath said.

Churchgoer Renato Travelli would agree with the sentiment. He gives to the church all year round, but come Christmas time, he's in the spirit of giving a little more.

"I always feel better during this time of the year, but you mean because of giving? Well, you always feel a little better after you give something," Travelli said.

It's added generosity in the spirit of Christmas, in the spirit of faith that McGrath said makes a generous heart feel a little fuller.
