LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – With the first significant snowfall of the year expected Wednesday evening, LaCrosse Emergency Management Coordinator Keith Butler says it's a good time to make sure your car is ready for winter.
Butler says option one should always be to avoid traveling during a storm.
But if you must brave the roads, he says, make sure to keep a small snow shovel, flashlight and blankets in the car with you.
He also says it's a good idea to keep granola or breakfast bars in your vehicle, as well as bottles of water –citing the blizzard that left motorists south of Madison stranded for six to seven hours last year.
"It's not just people traveling to Canada or across the Dakotas," Butler says. "Even if you're just planning on traveling somewhere in Wisconsin, it's a real bad idea."
"But if you must go make sure you have everything you need to survive that. If you get stuck, it could be half a day before somebody pulls you out of there," he says.
