DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - The heartbreaking disappearance of 2 cousins whose bodies were found nearly five months later has been voted the top Iowa news story of 2012.
Associated Press newspaper and broadcast members ranked the shocking disappearance of Lyric Cook and Elizabeth Collins the top story. Lyric was 10 and Elizabeth was 8 when they vanished after biking in the northeast Iowa town of Evansdale. Their bodies were found in December.
There was a tie for the second-ranked story between the Iowa presidential caucuses and the drought that has gripped the region.
Other top stories included the general election, claims about a meat product dubbed "pink slime," Iowa's gay marriage law, the misuse of funds at Peregrine Financial, University of Northern Iowa cutbacks, voter fraud and the visit of a top Chinese official.
