LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Volunteers braved the cold Monday to deliver warm meals to those unable to cook for themselves.
Mobile Meals of La Crosse delivers warm food to the homes of the elderly, the disabled, or those who are homebound.
Mobile Meals volunteer Dee Peacock used Christmas Eve to bring along her daughter, Lori and granddaughter, Rose, show the power of giving.
"We're lucky we're still able to cook for ourselves," Peacock said. "So, it's nice to enable others to have a warm meal."
A meal 91-year-old Mildred Bernstein wouldn't otherwise have.
"I am not one to cook, I find it difficult," Bernstein said. "(Mobile Meals supplies) very good meals and they cater to low sodium diets or sugar free diabetic diets – though they're not as tasty as the others might be!"
A warm meal always finds its way to Bernstein's table; whether it's a holiday or not.
"No rain, no sleet, no snow would forbid them to come and deliver the meals," Bernstein said.
Mobile Meals Director Melissa Greco said there's actually a spike in volunteers during the winter holiday season. Drivers are needed most during the summer and prime vacation times.
