MADISON (WKOW) -- Local television icon and former WKOW sports director, Marsh Shapiro, died Wednesday morning at the age of 73. He had been treated for brain cancer in recent years.

Shapiro was introduced to many Madison-area TV viewers as Marshall the Marshal on the popular children's television show by the same name.

The show aired on WKOW and Shapiro continued to work at the television station as a sportscaster long after Marshall the Marshal went off the air.

Shapiro is also known for founding The Nitty Gritty bar and restaurant, whose ownership remains in his family. A manager at the restaurant told WKOW Wednesday afternoon that the owners would not be ready to speak about the loss today, but were planning to post a statement on the Nitty Gritty's web site possibly as early as Friday evening.

Shapiro's facebook page is filled with warm thoughts from those who knew and worked with him.
