LA CRESCENT, Minnesota (WXOW) - With more people cooking at home for the holidays, four local fire departments are reminding people to Keep the Wreath Green.
Keep the Wreath Green is a fire prevention campaign that began around Thanksgiving.
It involves the Campbell, La Crescent, La Crosse and Onalaska Fire Departments.
Each department has a wreath of green lights hanging at its fire house.
Each time a fire occurs in one of the four communities, a green light is replaced with a red one.
The goal is to keep the wreath as green as possible.
"More people are probably home and they're doing more cooking, baking stuff like that and that's -- of course we all know the leading cause of fire in the united states is cooking," said La Crescent Fire Chief John Meyer.
So far, the wreaths have three red bulbs. There have been two structure fires in La Crosse, one in Onalaska.
The campaign will continue through the first of the year.
