LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Some homeowners in the Washburn neighborhood will get some help to make exterior repairs to their properties. The money comes from the La Crosse Community Foundation Johns, Flaherty and Collins - Michael Stoker Fund.
There's also support from the Foundation's Neighborhood Initiative. With this funding, the hope is that the neighborhood will not only become more visually appealing, but also grow tighter bonds between neighbors and make the neighborhood more safe and desirable. The last time the Washburn neighborhood received grants like this homeowners tended to put 4 to 5 dollars of their own money into their houses for every dollar of grant funding.
Heather Quackenboss of the La Crosse Community Foundation said, "I just think this is important and I think that becoming more neighborly is a very important thing for La Crosse and its really its what's going to help us."
The Washburn neighborhood is bordered by West Avenue, Jackson Street, Cass Street, and the Mississippi River. Residents will submit applications for the grant money and a committee will review those applications and choose recipients.
