St. Charles looking into dissolving police dept.

ST. CHARLES, Minn. (KTTC) -- The future is up in the air for the St. Charles Police Department. At Tuesday night's City Board meeting, the idea of dissolving the police department in the town was mentioned.

Instead of having a police department, the city may look toward contracting Winona County to patrol the neighborhood.

Officials say the level of 24-hour town surveillance would not be affected.

The city administrator, Nick Kloverman, says the idea is very preliminary. "Right now we're just looking. It was a precursory question that we asked the council to investigate this option. So the pros and cons are yet to be determined," he said.

The former police chief Bill Eckles promptly resigned in December following a performance evaluation. The City Administrator says with that seat open, this would be a good time to look at options.
