ONALASKA, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- The Hilltoppers' only lead of the second half came with only 17 seconds to play. Matt Thomas iced the free throw giving the Onalaska faithful plenty of reason to celebrate.
It was a much more somber mood on the Central bench. Friday saw part two of a tough week for the Red Raiders. They lost their first game of the season to Aquinas on Monday.
Central controlled the pace for much of the game. Aron Klos had 12 points in the first half alone (16 for the game). Trevor Schultz did his part as well with 11 points before the break, including three three-pointers. Central led 27-16 at the break.
Onalaska's shooters came alive in the second half. Braeden Stoner, Clint Rihn and Connor Helgeson all hit clutch shots to help chip away at Central's lead. The renewed productivity combined with missed free throws from the Red Raiders down the stretch meant only a two-point game in the closing seconds.
Matt Thomas sparked the spike in the decibel meter at Deeth Fieldhouse when he drew the foul on the made layup and headed to the line with a free throw for the lead. Thomas swished it from the line and made two more to seal a 58-55 Onalaska win.
The Hilltoppers improve to 5-1 in the MVC and sit second behind Aquinas. Central falls to 4-2 in the conference race.
