LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - It's a common saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away."
Dietitians at Gundersen Lutheran say it can certainly help.
If you're looking to ward off illness, a healthy intake of fruits and vegetables may be the solution. They're high in antioxidants that strengthen your immune system and make it less vulnerable to disease.
But, the key to staying healthy is having a healthy diet.
"Not just focusing on one fruit, one vegetable, one spice, or something like that, but just getting a variety of fruits and vegetables, making sure you're eating, you know, balanced," said Gina Dolenti, a registered dietitian at Gundersen Lutheran.
A variety of spices and herbs, like garlic and hot pepper, are also high in antioxidants.
Dietitians said the best way fight illness is through a balanced diet, rest and exercise.
