LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Economic development is at the forefront of La Crosse mayoral candidate Tim Kabat's agenda.
He introduced a development plan for the city Monday.
Kabat wants to establish a business coalition that works to bring new businesses to the city. He said it would create more jobs for residents.
He also wants to host regular business roundtable meeting to establish relationships and ideas with local business.
"I see my role, it's a very small part of that, but as a facilitator to help work with those new businesses," Kabat said. "It's all about promoting and marketing what we have here because we have a great community, we have a very high quality of life."
One of Kabat's main priorities involves redeveloping Trane Plant 6, Park Plaza and the Mobil Oil sites.
It's a way to invest in city property and develop a strong workforce, he said.
"Those sites are sitting vacant. They're not contributing anything to the tax base, to jobs, and a big key with people struggling at times. We need to hold the line on property taxes, so by growing our economic base, that's going to help all of us overall," Kabat said.
Redevelopment will have a catalyst effect, according to Kabat.
Improved land will create more job opportunities that could eventually lead to an investment in nearby neighborhoods and schools.
