Dufeck Wood Products & The Dairy Industry: Wisconsin Dairy News

Posted:

DENMARK, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Cheesemakers will tell you that in order to make great cheese you need great milk. And to store that cheese you need the best packaging.

In this segment of Wisconsin Dairy News see how Dufeck Wood Products has impacted the cheese industry.

Dufeck Wood Products is a company with more than a century of service to the dairy industry.

Paul Dufeck the President of Dufeck Wood Products says, "I'm the third generation with the company, so we started out in about 1905 and started making cheese boxes."

Jeanette Dufeck the C.F.O. of Dufeck Wood Products says, "My grandfather and my father were cheesemakers. There were these corner cheesemakers who bought cheese boxes from the Dufeck's. And who would know I would end up marrying one of them and be involved in the third generation!"

Much of the Aged Cheddar Cheese that's made in Wisconsin is aged in wood boxes made at Dufeck's.

Jeanette: "This is the tub, cheddar, flat, daisy …"

Back in 1912 the company suffered a huge loss when a fire swept through the business. Although the Dufeck Brothers soon rebuilt and returned to making boxes, they still have a stark reminder of that sad time.

Jeanette: "So whenever we're thinking we're having a bad day, if you read that, maybe it's not so bad!"

Today, things aren't so bad! The Dufeck's have managed to carve out a niche making specialty boxes for the cheese industry; such as containers for mammoth cheddars, as well as wood displays and gift boxes.

Jeanette: "Our national market is gift packaging, and that includes a lot of specialty boxes, wine boxes, crates, trays, as well as the cheese boxes, and we private label!"

With a reputation built on customer service and quality, the Dufeck's are poised to keep going for generations to come.

Paul: "There's something about the wooden box. We always said that the wooden box aged the best cheese because the wood would pass off the moisture and wouldn't get moldy. It wouldn't crumble in the coolers. So, and they're still using them. There's still a demand, so we'll still keep making them."

And that's Wisconsin Dairy News.
