LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow addressed the school's faculty and staff with his customary, start of the semester remarks Wednesday.
Gow spoke for roughly 45 minutes. He said the University has been hit with"several" million dollars in cuts under the current state budget, with only about 1/3 of them having been made up through tuition increases.
Gow said the lack of funding means the school's educators haven't received a raise in five years. He said that makes it tough for UWL to compete with other universities, which can offer those same professors and staff members more money.
"In a recession economy you don't ever expect you're going to get more money," Gow said. "But I think we're coming out of the worst of the recession."
"Hopefully things will be better this time around than they were two years ago," the Chancellor said. "Right now in the state we're running something of a surplus, so I think we'll be in better shape this time around."
Also on Wednesday, Gow announced the promotion of Assistant Chancellor of Student Affairs Paula Knudson to Vice Chancellor of the same department.
"It's basically a title change," said Knudson of the promotion. "We benefit from the good work that the people around us are doing. I have a number of dedicated, committed and compassionate people that I work with."
"Sometimes they make me look good," she said with a smile.
In overseeing student affairs, Knudson manages areas like student housing, student dining and student recreation.
