Mayo Clinic declared regional tuberculosis consultation center

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC)- While the disease may not be as widespread as it once was, Tuberculosis is still a big issue in many countries around the world. With new cases of TB popping up around the United States, Mayo Clinic may be on the frontline to battle against it.

Tuberculosis still remains the second-leading cause of death from infectious disease globally, a fact that Mayo Clinic recognizes and is hoping to curtail. Thanks to a designation from the Center for Disease Control, the fight at home could become easier.

They are one of five locations across the country declared a Regional Tuberculosis Training and Medical Consultation Center by the CDC. Mayo Clinic will develop new and enhanced training and technical support for those battling the disease. They will cover an 11-state area between now and 2017.

Clinicians of the World, based here in Rochester, travels across the globe helping those with serious medical issues, and they feel that this is a much-needed step in the global fight against a deadly disease.

Mayo Clinic President Dr. John Noseworth will be in Switzerland Friday to talk to a global summit about an antibiotic-resistant strain of tuberculosis that is growing around the world.
