SPARTA, WI (WXOW)—The Sparta High School Jazz Ensemble spent the day rehearsing for the UW-La Crosse Jazz Festival tomorrow.
The students came in during their day off to get some extra help from an idol, Reed Grimm.
Grimm is back in town for the UW-L Jazz Festival on Saturday. He had the morning off so his former teacher, and current Sparta High School Vocal Music Director, Janette Hanson asked him to work with the students.
Hanson said she noticed a difference in her students just over the couple hours Grimm worked with them.
"You'd never think about him being here at Sparta High School," Daniel Dawley, Senior, Sparta Vocal Jazz Ensemble said. "You think he'd be off doing more important things."
Grimm said his goal is to inspire fellow musicians.
"I feel like it is what I have to do," Grimm said. "As a performer, as an artist, you want to create more art so this is a great opportunity to do that."
Students said they loved Grimm's passion for music and energy that's contagious.
"He just brings everyone up to that level and it's a whole different feel because he adds to everything," Dawley said.
Grimm hopes his outgoing personality inspires students not to be afraid of their dreams.
"Whether or not it's American Idol or going and playing guitar," Grimm said. "Whatever that is I hope I can be an example and inspire more and more creativity in the direction of whatever that person wants to achieve."
Grimm will sing a song with the Sparta Jazz Ensemble during festival on Saturday.
The festival runs all day with workshops and concerts; the final concert will be at 7 p.m. featuring UW-L Jazz Ensemble, high school ensembles and guest artists David Pietro and Embrace.
Tickets are available at the door.
