ONALASKA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - In a tasty way to help military families, Operation Homefront hosted the 8th Annual Chili Cook-Off Saturday.
Operation Homefront's mission is to provide emergency financial assistance to families of service members and wounded warriors.
Organizers said Saturday's cook-off at the Harley Davidson in Onalaska was record breaking.
With twenty-five cooks competing and about 500 people casting ballots for their favorite spoonful, Operation Homefront was able to raise more than $3,500.
That money will help service families in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa.
Professionals and home cooks all participated in Saturday's event, all for different reasons.
"I am participating for Operation Homefront, for all the military families and soldiers, and also to get a little exposure for the Coast Guard Auxiliary and all the good things we can contribute to the community," said Caryn Byerson, an aux chef with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Byerson didn't take the win. Her competitor, home cook Mary Erickson, added her name to the Golden Crock Pot traveling trophy.
