Police encourage drivers to stay off icy roads

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Sunday's snow, sleet and freezing rain will likely keep the roads icy.

Many cars skidded into ditches locally.

News 19 crews found one vehicle being towed on Interstate 14 between La Crosse and La Crescent.

Police said the best way for drivers to stay safe is to avoid driving all together.

"If you do have to travel, remember your reaction time, the stopping distance is gonna be increased because of icy conditions. So, give yourself more of a cushion. Give yourself eight to 10 seconds between the next car," said Sgt. Kirk Flatten of the La Crosse Police Department.

Don't speed, Flatten added. The faster the car goes the less control the driver has if there's ice on the ground.
