Students confront school culture in retreat

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – High school juniors gathered at the La Crosse Center today to talk about creating a positive school environment as seniors.

The Second Annual Frontiers Responsibility Retreat was sponsored by rotary clubs around the region and brought together over 150 students from 10 schools.

"The theme today is what can you do to change and improve your school or your community," said Scott Mihalovic, principal of Logan High School in La Crosse. "And the way we see it is, in the middle of their junior year, they're going to be our newest leaders. And they start, this half of the year, to really develop programs and plans that can make a difference in our school. And then they have the entire senior year to implement them."

During the retreat, students discussed problems in school climate and brainstormed ways they could create a more positive atmosphere and reach out to students in need.

Mihalovic said the success of last year's retreat is reflected in this year's seniors.

"I would say this senior class at Logan High School is probably one of the nicest, kindest groups of kids," said Mihalovic. And I think, not that the leadership conference made the difference in that, but it gave young people an opportunity to grow out of their shell a little bit and truly understand that making a difference is a responsibility."
