Winter storm takes aim at the Coulee Region

Posted:

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A winter storm warning is in effect until 6 PM Wednesday for as much as 6" to 8" snow for much of the region. Lesser amounts will fall in the northwestern parts of the viewing area.

Temperatures today reached up into the 40s but have slipped back into the 30s and overnight should fall through the 20s. In the meantime a storm to the southwest will move in and generate rain, sleet and freezing rain this evening, quickly changing over to snow.

Roads will get slick with several inches of snow by morning and a few more again after sunrise. In addition blowing snow will get worse as northwesterly winds increase later tonight and tomorrow. Winds will gust up to 30 miles per hour and keep roads slick and dangerous in many areas.

Accumulating snow should be over by Wednesday afternoon and blowing snow will be the headliner in the afternoon. Falling temperatures into the teens in the afternoon will remind us that winter is far from being over.

Temperatures in the wake of the storm will mean highs in the mid single digits on Thursday and slightly warmer on Friday. Highs will get back to normal by the end of the weekend and early next week. Enjoy your evening and drive safely if you have to be out and about.
