La Crosse, Wisconsin (WXOW) ---- February 4th is the start of open enrollment...that's when parents can choose the school district they want their kids to attend for the next school year.
Wisconsin began allowing parents to choose their district back in 1998. There is no charge for students to attend a district outside of where they live although nonresidents must have transportation at least to a bus stop within the district.
The La Crosse District typically sees more students coming in to the district. Last year, they had about 75 more students coming in than going out which the superintendent says meant half-a million more in funding.
Open enrollment runs through April 30th. Parents only need to apply if they want to send their child to a district other than the one in which they live.
Applications can be found online...at www.SMS.DPI.W-I.GOV/SMS_PSCTOC.
You can also call the district to get a paper copy.
