LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW)—Rich Smith, Mayoral Candidate, said too many people are living outside of La Crosse and driving into work, taking money away from the tax base.
He said the problem is the city's housing.
Smith believes that if we can make La Crosse neighborhoods more desirable, more people will live and work in the city.
He wants to make it easier for people to fix up their homes.
His plan is to establish a Mayor's Fund to help community members pay for remodels.
He'd also like to cut city fees to homeowners that want to remodel their homes.
"We've given a lot to businesses over the years," Smith said. "I think we should turn our eyes to neighborhoods, give them some of that money. The tax incentives and let them build the neighborhoods. We can't lose our neighborhoods. Some people think they're already gone. We can at least try."
Smith said the money for the Mayor's Fund will come from a portion of his salary and private donations.
