SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A Tomah woman is killed and child left in critical condition in a two vehicle crash Friday morning between Sparta and Tomah.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, the crash happened at 9:16 a.m. along Highway 16 near Hazel Avenue in the Town of Adrian.  One of the vehicles headed west tried to pass another vehicle when the driver saw oncoming vehicles.  As the driver went to move back into the westbound lane, the vehicle went out of control and hit head on with the eastbound vehicle.  A spokesperson from the Sheriff's Department says ice was a factor in the crash.

A 49-year-old woman in the westbound vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries from the crash. Two passengers in the westbound vehicle went to Tomah Memorial Hospital.  One of them is a child who was left in critical condition according to the spokesperson. The driver was taken to Mayo Health Care System in Sparta for his injuries.

Rescue crews had to extricate the woman driving the eastbound vehicle.  Med Link Air flew her to Gundersen Lutheran in La Crosse in serious condition.

People in the vehicle being passed and another car both stopped to help the victims until first responders could arrive on the scene.

The Sheriff's Department has not released any of the names of those involved pending notification of family.

The crash closed Highway 16 for three hours.

The Wisconsin State Patrol and Sheriff's Department are continuing to investigate the crash.
