Gov. Branstad wants to improve Mississippi waterway

DAVENPORT, Iowa (WXOW) - The Mississippi River plays a crucial role in the global economy.

That's why Iowa Governor Terry Branstad (R) held a special meeting in Davenport, Iowa on Tuesday (02/05). Farming, business and government experts discussed ways to improve the important waterway.  Much of the talks centered on improving the aging, outdated lock and dam system.

The unfunded mandate becomes a concern over spending and investment.

"We can't just keep kicking this can down the road. We've got to find new and innovative ways to do it," says Gov. Branstad.

Since China receives so many U.S. exports, Gov. Branstad even suggested that China might be asked to invest in improving transportation along the Mississippi River.
