HOLMEN, WI (WXOW)—Freezing rain turned to ice instantly on the roads and caused multiple accidents on Highway 53 in Holmen Thursday night.
The first accident happened on Highway 53 North near Briggs Road.
A deputy pulled over to help those two cars, with his lights on, and another car rear ended the deputy's car, making it a four car accident.
A few other cars hit their breaks to avoid the accident and ended up in the ditch themselves.
Several people were taken to the hospital with non life threatening injuries.
"As I was driving up here with lights and sirens going there were people attempting to pass me, as I was keeping it about 50 mph," Sgt. Brian Wierzbicki, La Crosse County Sheriff's Department said. "They were frustrated because its 65 speed limit and they assume they have to go that fast."
Wierzbicki said the scene could have been a lot worse if it weren't for the Highway Department's quick response to salt the road.
