LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- Governor Scott Walker is releasing parts of his budget proposal, and The Boys and Girls Club will see about $2.3 million dollars in funds.
It's unclear exactly how the money will be divided up among clubs in Wisconsin. The executive director of La Crosse Area Boys and Girls Clubs, Mike Desmond, says Milwaukee will probably get a lot of it because they have more low income families, but La Crosse clubs, which serve about 500 kids a day, will likely see a share of that money.
"I think the Governor made it clear he wanted this money targeted toward education programs, particularly reading," Desmond said. "We do have reading programs here, so it's not like we have to suddenly create something to be eligible for those funds. we have reading help, tutoring already in place."
Desmond says La Crosse area clubs will apply for the money. and regardless of how much they get, he says the governor's investment shows an appreciation for the services the Boys and Girls club provides.
