United Way honors community members

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The Great Rivers United Way took time Tuesday evening to recognize people and groups who have contributed to the betterment of the community.

The dinner was to celebrate the conclusion of the United Way's fundraising campaign.

The campaign raised more than $2 million for 27 partner organizations who provide a wide range of services in a five county area.

A number of the United Way's "Give, Advocate, Volunteer, and Live United" awards were presented to individuals like Mike Desmond of the Boys and Girls Club, Sarah Havens of Gundersen Lutheran, Altra Federal Credit Union, and Mid-West Family Broadcasting.

"United Way is such a great agency and just represents what our credit union stands for that it's been real easy for us to get volunteers," says Kevin Strangman of Altra Federal Credit Union. "Help out our neighbors, helping out those that are members of ours so we see them in our office but they also have needs outside of that and it just really helps us give back to the community, which is part of what our mission is and what we're all about."
