LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- La Crosse County received an offer on the vacant Park Plaza property on Barron Island.
The county acquired the property in 2001 after the previous owners failed to pay taxes. According to County Administrator Steve O'Malley, the county paid about $750,000 in back taxes and spent about another $750,000 to demolish the old Holiday Inn on the property and clean up the site.
O'Malley said it's too soon to discuss what the potential buyer wants to do with the property or what the value of the land might be.
"It's the entrance to our community. It would be wonderful to have some type of quality development there," O'Malley said. "It's been a long time coming and we're just optimistic that this may be an indication that the economy is turning around, particularly as it relates to this property and we would just be very pleased to have a better entrance to our community than a vacant lot."
In order for the sale to go through, the county board needs to approve it. The county also has to work with the city of La Crosse. O'Malley says more details may be available in the next month or two.
