I have been involved with the La Crosse School District even before my children entered kindergarten at Southern Bluffs Elementary. I began as a frequent speaker in the elementary school about pet care, then volunteered on numerous committees. Once my daughters started classes, I volunteered in their classrooms and became a member of the District Wide Parent Committee. I chaired this committee for many years.
I have also served as a parent representative to the State Superintendents Parents Advisory Committee under two administrations and participated in a fact finding trip to Germany, in this capacity. I am active in the community and currently am a member on several Gundersen Lutheran boards. Of these, my passion is to support the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Fund. I am also a member of the Coulee Council on Addiction Board.
I have been a School Board Member for three terms and am proud of our accomplishments. We are in exciting times with the promise of a new elementary school on the north side. Area families also have the opportunity for their students to attend an elementary school offering year round education at Hamilton, or the Northwoods International school, or the Environmental school at Summit, or one of the other excellent elementary schools as well as SOTA I and Coulee Montessori Charter Schools.
At the middle school level, we have the Design Institute, Global Village, and School on the River, as well as SOTA II. At the High School level we have the Health Science Academy, advanced placement classes and multiple unique class choices. I look forward to being a part of new educational opportunities for all students in the La Crosse School District. It's so exciting!
The board has faced many challenges during my tenure. Among these, finding funding for schools and programs has been one of the largest. We have been fortunate that our community has been supportive. But public education funding remains a need that requires our continued attention.
Security of our buildings is another challenging area. Over the past several years the Board has made good use of community referendum funds for the purpose of addressing building security. However, with the tragic events at Sandy Hook its importance can't be overstated.
One of the Board's strategic plan goals is to implement customized learning for all students. While this will take time, it is important in this age of advancing technology, that we find ways for students to be more accountable by customizing their education experience.
